2007-07-16 13:46  MOFCOM

The 8th Meeting of China-Malaysia Joint Committee of Economics and Trade was held in Kuala Lumpur, July 13. Chinese Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai and Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz co-chaired the meeting. The two sides exchanged views on expanding and deepening bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Bo spoke highly of China-Malaysia economic cooperation. Since the two countries established diplomatic ties 33 years ago, China and Malaysia have shown consistent effort in building a relationship of mutual benefits and common development. Last year, bilateral trade reached a staggering $37.1 billion, demonstrating a 21% year-on-year increase. Malaysia is now ranking as the 8th largest trade partner of China, while China occupies the 4th place in Malaysia foreign trade. With such a strong performance, the objective set by the leaders of the two countries to build a bilateral trade scale exceeding $50 billion by the year 2010 has the promise to be fulfilled before its time, Bo said.

China-Malaysia trade has a solid foundation, and the two economies are highly complementary, Bo said. Stable society, fast-growing economy and favorable investment environment, all contribute to the fact that Chinese government is always ready to encourage competent enterprises to invest in Malaysia. Chinese enterprises have a competitive edge in infrastructural fields such as electronic equipments, machine building, telecom, railway and bridge construction. It is advisable for the two sides to explore new potentials of cooperation, introduce and launch key projects in these fields. China is dedicated, together with Malaysia, to raising the level of bilateral trade cooperation and promoting common prosperity.

Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz also recognized the tremendous achievements that China and Malaysia had made in trade and economic cooperation. China is an important trade partner of Malaysia, and China’s fast-growing economy has benefited many countries, including Malaysia. Rich in natural resources, Malaysia is willing to strengthen trade ties with China in the realm of agricultural goods, such as fruits and dairy products, and is ready to deepen bilateral cooperation in the field of bio-energy and auto industry, Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz said, and Malaysian government welcome more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Malaysia and also encourage Malaysian enterprises to expand their reach in China.

The two sides also exchanged views on the 4th China-ASEAN expo and the new Round of WTO negotiation.

After the meeting, Bo Xilai and Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz singed The Minutes of the 8th Meeting of China-Malaysia Joint Committee of Economics and Trade. Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Cheng Yonghua, Chinese and Malaysian officials in charge of trade, agriculture, finance, information, and quality control, and representatives from enterprises attended the meeting.
