Minister Bo meets former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
2007-08-23 10:52
  From:MOFCOM    Article type:Original

Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai met with former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on August 21 in Beijing.

Bo traced the history of Sino-US trade from 1979 to 2006, which witnessed a trade volume growth from 2.5 billion US dollars and 260 billion US dollars, an over 100 fold increase. China has been US’s fastest growing exporting destination for 5 consecutive years, and has become its 4th largest export market. The rapid growth evidenced the complementary nature and huge potential of Sino-US economic relations.

The recent signals sent by US government, however, were unfavorable to the healthy development of Sino-US economic ties. A series of moves, such as the joint antidumping and countervailing investigations on steel and other products, the wide publicity of the safety issues of Chinese food and toys, and the recent Congressional proposals concerning trade with China, evidenced an obvious trend of protectionism. China attaches great importance to the quality and safety of export products, and strongly objects to the practice of trade protectionism, Bo said.

Albright agreed with Bo on the importance and mutually beneficial nature of Sino-US economic relations. She pointed out that the partnership with China was crucial to the US. Sino-US economic relations were now facing unprecedented opportunities as well as challenges, Albright said, which demanded a positive attitude on the part of the two countries to confront new problems and take efficient measures to settle them.
